Once a granite slab has been selected by a consumer for use as a countertop, the next step is called “templating”. The cabinets that the counter will rest on must be carefully measured and a template must be made. The template is made from thin strips of foam core board that maintain their shape and size even when exposed to water. Generally, the strips are glued together and marked with permanent marker with instructions for the cutters. A template is much like a pattern which will be used to cut the granite slab, making room for things like the sink, faucets, spigots and more.
